In early 2020, just before lockdown, I dreamt I was sitting at the counter table in our home. On the table before me was the most beautiful bread—freshly baked, homemade bread. As I looked at it, I thought of Gideon. In Judges it is written of the barley loaf that rolled into the camp of Midian and struck it down (Judges 7:13).
I can testify that during the lockdown season, our family truly gathered around that table. It became the place where we shared communion together, as the Lord instructed: “Do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19). We broke bread, declaring His Word, remembering His covenant, and thanking Him for His sacrifice.
Looking back, I can say with certainty that God’s amazing grace and awesome victory were made real to us “as in Gideon”—not through our strength, but by simply sitting at His table, bringing everything to Him, and rejoicing in the freedom we have in Christ.
Encouragement for Communion
Wherever you are, and as often as you can—at home, in the car, or gathered with your family before a meal—take communion. Do it often, in remembrance of our Lord. Not out of religion, but out of relationship. Communion is intimacy with Jesus. We don’t have to wait for once a month in a church service, because we are the Church.
Bring everything to the Lord’s table—your needs, your gratitude, your prayers—and declare His Word over your life. For it is by His covenant we are healed, forgiven, and set free.
